Kakum Canopy Walkway Is Safe and Secure

Kakum Canopy Walkway Is Safe and Secure — Management Assures Public

The Management of Kakum National Park and the iconic Canopy Walkway has firmly denied recent media reports suggesting that the walkway had collapsed. At a press conference held in Cape Coast, Mr. Francis Dontoh Cobbinah, Executive Director of the Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust (GHCT), reassured the public that the walkway remains fully operational, structurally sound, and completely safe for visitors.

"The Kakum Canopy Walkway has never collapsed. It is intact, regularly maintained, and safe for use," Mr. Cobbinah emphasized.

Built for Safety, Maintained with Precision

Constructed in 1995 by a team of experienced Canadians in collaboration with skilled Ghanaians, the 330-meter-long Kakum Canopy Walkway has operated for over two decades without any incidents. According to management, safety has always been paramount.

Mr. Cobbinah explained that routine maintenance is a critical part of the operation. Components of the structure—including bridges, nylon nets, and support ropes—are frequently replaced or reinforced. Just last month, all nylon nets and bridge sections were renewed as part of the park's scheduled upkeep.

“We don’t wait for wear and tear to cause problems,” he said. “Every section is regularly oiled, tightened, and tested to meet international safety standards.”

Insurance & Risk Management

In addition to ongoing physical maintenance, the Canopy Walkway is covered by a comprehensive insurance policy—protecting not only the facility itself but also visitors and staff. This extra layer of security underscores management’s commitment to the well-being of every guest who explores Kakum's treetops.

Clarification on Misleading Reports

Mr. Cobbinah clarified that the recent collapse reported in the media occurred at the Bunso Arboretum in the Eastern Region—not at Kakum National Park. He suggested that confusion between the two locations may have led to the spread of false information.

He urged media outlets and individuals to verify any claims with park management before making public statements, to prevent misinformation from harming Ghana’s tourism sector.

Kakum Remains Open and Welcoming

With this assurance, the management of Kakum National Park is encouraging both local and international tourists to continue visiting and enjoying one of West Africa’s most iconic eco-tourism attractions.

“Visitor safety is, and always will be, our top priority,” Mr. Cobbinah reaffirmed. “We welcome everyone to continue experiencing the beauty of Kakum National Park without fear.”
